Mulroy Hoops Chairpersons Report 2021

Welcome to our 2021 AGM

Firstly, I would like to thank all the members of the committee for their input and help during the year. The 2020/21 season will certainly be remembered as the season that never was. While we did not have any basketball we did take the chance to work on things behind the scenes in preparation for our return.

Sports Capital Funding

We were awarded €14,670 in the latest round of Sports Capital Funding for Equipment.  With this funding we purchased 100 quality basketballs of varying sizes. Gym benches for seating, basketball trolleys, a storage container and safety pads. We also added an adjustable side basket.

LYIT Mulroy Hoops Outreach Programme

We approached the LYIT Sports Department about the idea of adding Basketball Ireland coaching courses to their curriculum. In return the students would fulfil a 6 week placement in Primary schools. We solicited feedback from the schools with all 18 schools in the Mulroy area willing to come on board. The LYIT under Michael Murphy’s guidance hope to run the course prior to Christmas and place students in Feburary 2022.

Basketball Ireland Club Mark

There are four levels to the Basketball Ireland Club Mark – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Clubs must achieve a pass grade at each level to progress to the next stage. Each level focuses on different elements of running a club including governance, club structure and player/coach development. Mulroy Hoops has achieved Bronze, Silver and Gold over the past season and are part of an exclusive group of two to hold the Gold Mark.

Fundraising and Charity Work

During the pandemic we organized a very successful Charity Fundraiser ‘Wild Atlantic Way Dribble-a-thon, virtually dribbling from Malin to Mizen along the WAW. We raised €2000 for the JigSaw Charity. We also ran a Dunk For Dough draw raising vital funds for the club.

We are now on the cusp of beginning a new season of games, we hope to enter 8 teams in the NW league. Our membership continues to grow with around 170 child members. Along with our existing coaching we have recruited a few new ones which is great to see.

Our club relies entirely on volunteers at all levels and as we come out of the pandemic we will rely on these volunteers more than ever. Therefore, I urge you to consider volunteering and becoming involved. Our season is short but busy (Sept – March) and we require the following positions to be filled.

  • Child Protection Officer
  • Fixtures Convenor
  • Assistant Secretary
